The Canadian International Council (CIC) is an independent, member-based council established to strengthen Canada's role in global affairs and believes that foreign policy, rather than being an esoteric concern of experts, directly affects the lives and prosperity of all citizens. Expert research and analysis are the essential foundations for foreign policy. Every year, the CIC brings together the very best minds to publish a major research report on a foreign policy issue related to Canada’s future prosperity and its position in a changing world.

The CIC worked with Capsule to develop two consecutive reports: 'Rights and Rents' and '9 Habits of Highly Effective Resource Economies'. Each presented recommendations for Canada, backed by an array of quantitative data, case studies, and commentary. The visual approach was key to developing a recognizable brand and narrative for the research, yet it was unique to the subject matter.

Rights and Rents: Harnessing Intellectual Property

In a global economy driven by human creativity, strategic management of intellectual property is essential for national productivity. Capsule designed this major research report to examine Canada’s IP regime within a highly competitive international context. We established a consistent, easy-to-navigate narrative structure across ten chapters, using "Case in Point" and "Lessons Learned" features to anchor the data. By pairing bold photography with stakeholder quotes and clear data visualization, we transformed a complex legal and economic subject into a compelling, accessible roadmap for Canadian innovation.

Why Canada Must Harness its Intellectual Property Resources

"In today’s global economic context, IP requires careful consideration that is mindful of approaches being taken by other countries. Investment in and strategic management of human creativity and intellectual resources and products are the route to our future, and our future prosperity. To this end, the CIC decided to examine Canada's IP regime in light of the highly competitive international context, and with an eye to national strategies for innovation and increased productivity. This requires wise and strategic management of intellectual property. The report and its recommendations were the result."

9 Habits of Highly Effective Resource Economies

This research project was born from a critical question: how can Canada derive maximum long-term benefit from its natural assets? Capsule developed a visual framework for this international comparative analysis, highlighting lessons learned from resource-rich countries worldwide. We focused on creating a clear, conversational layout that encouraged a broader national dialogue on economic value. Through disciplined information architecture and integrated case studies, the design helped bridge the gap between technical resource management and Canada's future prosperity.

OF HIGHLY EFFECTIVE RESOURCE ECONOMIES

Lessons for Canada

"The result of this research project began with this question: How can Canada derive maximum benefit for the future of Canadians from this tremendous natural advantage? The question invites international comparative analysis, and indeed, there are lessons to be learned from how other resource-rich countries manage their natural assets and build economic value around them. There are also lessons to be learned at home about what works and what does not. The goal of this report is to inform and encourage a broader national conversation about what needs to be done to ensure Canada’s future prosperity."
